The Tribe of JUDAH

Last week I went to the Korean grocery store in Irvine with my kids. Interestingly enough, the name of the grocery store is ZION market. As I was driving back home, a yellow jeep was in front of me at a stop light. It had a picture of a LION for the covering of its spare tire! DOUBLE DOUBLE!! Where am I going with all this?

In order to understand the Zionist Movement that began in the late 1800s with the House of Rothchild, there needs to not only be an understanding of Old Testament history but Old Testament prophecies for the House of Israel and the House of Judah. The Major Prophet (5) books and the Minor Prophet (12) books within the Old Testament are dealing with two different nations, two different names and two different destinies.

Not understanding this basic history has led to misapplying prophetic passages of scripture to the wrong group of people. Mainline church denominations and leaders have lumped “Israel” and “Judah” and “Israeli” and “Jews” and “Judaism” and “Star of David” ALL together because they don’t really understand Old Testament history and culture but focus more on New Testament personal application. It is a travesty but it happens all the time.

Due to the nation of Israel’s apostasy and idolatry in the Old Testament, the nation of Israel became divided into two separate nations (I Kings 11). No longer would all 12 tribes carry the name “Israel.” Yes, they were all still the “Hebrew people” collectively, but their national identity and name changed. When the nation of Israel divided after Solomon’s reign, ten tribes belonged to the Northern Kingdom and called themselves the House of Israel. The rest of the two tribes belonged to the Southern Kingdom and called themselves the House of Judah. Both kingdoms/nations experienced a foreign invasion, captivity and dispersion at different time periods that marked them with different identities and destinies.

The Northern Kingdom (House of Israel) was taken captive in 721 BC under Assyrian rule. The Southern Kingdom (House of Judah) was taken captive in 586 BC under Babylonian rule. This is very significant because the Major and Minor Prophet books that are in the Old Testament are dealing with these two historical events.

Different prophets like Ezekiel, Zechariah, Hosea, Habakkuk, etc. were called by God to speak a different message either to the House of Israel or to the House of Judah. If you don’t know this, you will lump all the prophecies together and apply the various prophecies to the wrong nation and to the wrong time frame. (For example, the book of Isaiah is dealing with prophecies given to the nation of Israel but the book of Jeremiah is dealing with prophecies given to the nation of Judah.)

The Israelites would never call themselves “Jews” just as much the Jews would never have been called “Israelites.” However, in our main denominational churches today, it is all the one and the same. This has become very dangerous and has created so much confusion with the whole Zionist movement and with the modern nation of Israel. To put it simply…it is as if you and your sibling received a prophetic word from a prophet. Each of you received a special destiny/calling Word from the Lord that will greatly impact your future. Is it wise to mix up the different prophetic word since you both are within the same family anyway? Absolutely not! Mismatching a prophetic word could do much damage to the both of you.

Simply put, if you want to be technical about the true identity of the nation of Israel and the nation of Judah, you have to go back to the original captivities and diaspora of  721 BC and 70 AD to map it all out. There are a plethora of books written analyzing these two separate nations and their journey. I recommend starting with these:

  • The Story of Celto-Saxon Israel by W. H. Bennett
  • The Thirteenth Tribe by Arthur Koestler
  • The Jews of Khazaria by Kevin Alan Brook
  • Jewish Fundamentalism in Israel by Israel Shahak and Norton Mezvinsky

You might be wondering, “Who cares? What does this have to do with my personal walk with God?” It has a lot to do with it because these Old Testament prophecies are actually being fulfilled right smack in front of you but not in the way you have been taught. Remember what happened in the Garden of Eden and the Fall of Adam and Eve? The serpent or satan is a criminal and lawless, and he repeatedly uses the same deceptive schemes. He is the “Father of Lies” (John 8:44).

Understanding Hebrew history will help you correctly interpret scripture so you can personally understand and protect yourself from the apostasy that will take place within the Church and Jewish world. It will truly boost your faith. It will help you recognize the sneaky schemes of the evil one in this hour. It will prepare you for the great falling away that Paul spoke about. It will impact Christian believers and the state of Jerusalem as the ones who will be “falling away/apostasy” and is NOT referring to unbelievers.

Let us be alert to understand that the people who lived in the nation of Judah were called Jews, so Judea was the land of the Jews back in Jesus’ day. If the “Jews” are in the land of Palestine today, then why is it called “Israel”? It should be rightly called “Judea” because Jews cannot claim the name Israel, and they are totally aware of this. Once the nation divided soon after Solomon’s united reign, the name Israel was given to the 10 tribes of the nation of Israel NOT to the 2 tribes of the nation of Judea.

After my 12 course certification on Jewish-Christian Studies, I was very troubled by what I had learned because none of the pieces of Zionism matched up. For instance, symbolism is HUGE in representing national identity and especially for the Hebrew people. The emblem of the nation of Israel was always the menorah. The emblem of the nation of Judea was always the fig tree. The individual Tribe of Judah was always the lion and each 12 tribe had their own emblem or royal crest.

Why aren’t any of these symbols on the modern flag of Israel today? Very strange indeed to not have these ancient and original symbols represent the modern nation of Israel. Who are they really representing? Are they truly fulfilling Bible prophecy through God’s powerful hand of repentance and peace OR through man’s hand of force and manipulation?

You will know them by their fruit (character) – Matthew 7:16. When you study all the events from the late 1800s to 1948 to 1967 and to now, I do not see the character of Jesus in any of these geopolitical decisions that were made by the government of Israel. I am asking hard questions, and I believe you should too. Do your own homework by studying their history. It will take you on a road less traveled…

2 Thessalonians 2:1-3: “Now we request you, brethren, with regard to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together to Him, that you not be quickly shaken from your composure or be disturbed either by a spirit or a message or a letter as if from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord has come. Let no one in any way deceive you, for it will not come unless the apostasy/great falling away/rebellion comes first…”

  1. DOUBLE DOUBLE!! 🙂 Thank you Merci for setting the facts straight here and so simply put-Biblical hermeneutics 101 in one sitting! (actually a few reads :- ).
So to reiterate -why do we need to know these things? The nation of Israel and the nation of Judah are actually two different nations, with different identities and different destinies… so as to be more alert of the events going on around us. “Understanding Hebrew history will help you correctly interpret scripture so you can personally understand and protect yourself from the apostasy that will take place within the Church and Jewish world”. Gotcha and God bless you ~S
