Surely GOODNESS and MERCY…

It has been so hot in Southern California these past two weeks. I don’t know why I easily forget that in the last week of August, it is always smothering hot! After all, it is the week of my son’s birthday. This reminds me of what a dear friend of mine prophesied over my son when he was just 2 years old…

As I was teaching at California State University, I also stepped out to do a design project for my coworker’s new home. After I finished teaching my classes in the morning, I would go shopping with “my first client” to purchase furniture, accessories, and more. I had to bring my son with me during these early afternoons. I would have my stroller with all his snacks and toys to occupy him while I would shop endlessly with my soon becoming friend. It was fun, exciting and exhausting all at the same time with a 2 year old running around the store. I was making sure that he wasn’t damaging or breaking anything. My dear friend was patient while I was losing my patience to say the least…

One day, she began to quote a verse in Psalm 23:6 “Surely GOODNESS (my son) and MERCY (me) will follow me…” as we would be all together shopping in all these stores. My son would be climbing on the beds and sofas trying them all out. We would laugh, and she reminded me that his name is “Goodness” even when he was acting naughty at times. That encouraging word stuck with me as a young mom rearing her first, very active son. I never forgot what she said and how she would sing that worship song as we would walk through rows and rows of furniture…

This year, my son is 14 (7+7)! DOUBLE DOUBLE!! He wanted to rearrange his room and make it more “grown up” with his own design ideas. He asked for a bonsai tree, so I began to do my hunt for his room accessories and my love for design kicked in. I finally found them at a store and brought one home to see if he liked it. There was a small rock in the pot, so I decided to remove it. As I picked it up, I realized that it was faced down and had something written on it. Guess what it said on it?! “Goodness”

These are what I call “GOD WINK MOMENTS” when He reminds us of His promises and will fulfill what He places within our hearts…Oh My Goodness (OMG)!

  1. Aw! What a sweet story. Thanks for sharing. I’m sure it will increasingly take on meaning for your son as he matures in life with God.
